Roy Hodgson doesn't know his best XI, says Alan Smith

Former Arsenal and England striker Alan Smith says Roy Hodgson still doesn't know his best England team.

England manager Hodgson drew criticism following his decision to make six changes to his starting line up ahead of their final Euro 2016 group game against Slovakia.

The Three Lions went into the game knowing a win would leave them top of Group B, an outcome that would likely offer an easier route into the tournament's latter stages.

But they were met by a stubborn Slovakian side, whose resolute defending proved too difficult for Hodgson's men to overcome.

The game finished 0-0, meaning Wales took first place going into the last 16 following their 3-0 win over Russia, a result which forced England down into second.

The aftermath of the result saw Hodgson's selection policy questioned, with a number of queries over who will now start their next game.

When asked if Hodgson knows his best starting eleven, Smith told the Sky Sports Euro 2016 Podcast: "Probably not. The Harry Kane factor, I think would have, not confused him, but made him feel, 'Oh, Harry's not quite at it, he's looking a bit jaded, what do I do now?'

"Going into the tournament I think he would have known his best XI, certainly the shape of his attack.

"But now, form, as so often happens in tournament football, dictates a manager's thinking… and that's what has happened, so it's going to be very interesting to see what line up he does choose for that last 16 game."

Having qualified from the group stage, England will now face the runners up of Group F, which includes Hungary, Iceland, Portugal and Austria, on June 27 in the second round.
