Marcus Rashford's stunning England debut came as no surprise to the rest of the squad, according to Chris Smalling.

The Manchester United forward scored just 138 seconds into his senior international debut as England claimed a 2-1 victory over Australia at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on Friday night.

It was quite the international audition by the 18-year-old, who would have most certainly boosted his chances of being included in Roy Hodgson's final 23-man squad for Euro 2016, which must be announced by Tuesday.

"I was so happy for him," his United team-mate Smalling said.

"I think a lot of the lads have been very impressed with him in training because he has been that threat and his finishing has been quality.

Jordan Henderson has twice come up against Rashford at club level and, having seen him at close quarters with England, is excited by the teenager's potential.

"He has been brilliant for United all season and coming in here, (he has had) no fear," the Liverpool captain said.

"I don't know how long it was but it was early that he gets his first goal for England.

"I am over the moon for him and hopefully that can be the start of something special for him."
