How does Roy Hodgson's current crop of English talent compare to those who starred at Euro 96? Former England captain Ray Wilkins picks his combined XI...

Twenty years ago this summer, England played host to the European Championships as football 'came home'.

The Three Lions dazzled, reaching the semi-final stage where Germany knocked the hosts out on penalties before going on the defeat the Czech Republic in the final.

But how do Hodgson's team compare to the side that came so close to emulating the World Cup winning boys of 1966? Wilkins had his say on Sky Sports Now...

GOALKEEPER - David Seaman

Joe Hart and David Seaman are two fantastic goalkeepers but I have to go with David. At that period he was coming towards the prime of his international career, he had more experience so he just pips Joe.

DEFENCE - Gary Neville, Tony Adams, Gareth Southgate, Stuart Pearce

The Euro 96 back four had more experience than the present day, they were stronger both physically and in character.

MIDFIELD - Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Paul Gascoigne, Jack Wilshere

Paul Gascoigne, along with Glenn Hoddle, were the most gifted players England have produced in my time. Gazza edged Wayne Rooney out of the team, while Eric Dier gets the nod ahead of Paul Ince in the defensive midfield position.

STRIKERS - Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham

England could really do with Alan Shearer now, that's for sure, he was a fantastic centre-forward.

Teddy Sheringham wasn't the quickest player in the world, but over the first 10 yards and with his head he was terrific. Teddy and Shearer beat Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.
