Record-breaking Cristiano Ronaldo was Real Madrid's match-winner as they beat Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Sergio Ramos' own-goal levelled the tie at 3-3 on aggregate after Robert Lewandowski and Ronaldo had scored a goal apiece on the night at the Bernabeu, sending the game into extra time.

Real - and Ronaldo - had too much for the 10 men of Bayern in the additional half-hour though after Arturo Vidal was sent off shortly before the end of normal time.

Two goals from Ronaldo and another from substitute Marco Asensio sealed Real's place in the semi-finals for the seventh consecutive season, the longest streak in history, and more records were part of the game's key talking points...

Ronaldo starts the 100 club

The Real Madrid forward has now become the first player to reach 100 Champions League goals. While the feat seemed inevitable at some point, five goals over the two legs has brought the accolade sooner than expected and adds another bragging right heading into his showdown with Lionel Messi in Sunday's El Clasico.

Ronaldo laboured through much of the match, like his Real team-mates, but as ever was on hand to be the side's match winner once again.

Zinedine Zidane highlighted the threat of Robert Lewandowski before the game, but - as labelled by Guillem Balague on Revista this year - it was Real's own out-and-out centre-forward who proved to have the deciding say once again.

Bayern must refresh

Bayern Munich sent out a side with an average age of 30 years and 116 days for the match, and there's little doubting that the German giants need to refresh in the summer.

Two of their starting XI in Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso will be retiring in the summer, while their two wide men in Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery - 33 and 34 respectively - won't be able to go on forever.

Bundesliga domination is pretty much a given with their current squad, but if they want to get ahead of the La Liga giants on the European front, then new, younger faces will be needed.

Can Isco replace Bale for El Clasico?

Gareth Bale is extremely doubtful for El Clasico at the weekend with an ankle injury and it remains to be seen whether Isco can fill the Welshman's boots for the biggest domestic game on the planet.

Real, in truth, often look more balanced as a side when they're not forced to field the full BBC trident, and his absence could be a blessing in disguise as they prepare to host their bitter rivals.

Isco impressed in fits and bursts against Bayern, but probably didn't do enough to rubber stamp his place and it remains to be seen whether Zidane will stick with the Spaniard - especially considering he withdrew him for Lucas Vazquez with 20 minutes to go and the game still in the balance.

Controversial decisions cost Bayern

Whether or not he was guilty of persistent fouling, there is little doubting that the decision to send Arturo Vidal off was a poor one. The Chilean midfielder clearly won the ball from Asensio after 84 minutes and Bayern should have retained a full complement of players heading into extra time.

Already drained by 90 minutes of trying to fight back into the tie, Bayern were simply too tired to compete in the added-on 30 and were helpless to prevent Real netting three more times, especially considering the crucial third - and Ronaldo's second of the night - was scored with the Portuguese in an offside position.

It's difficult enough to overturn a result at the Bernabeu under normal circumstances, but it makes it almost impossible when the two big decisions of the match go against you.
