Lazio lost ground in the title race, Udinese were held by Napoli, Inter Milan dropped two points while lowly Novara beat Siena.
Lazio have fallen further behind AC Milan and Juventus following a 1-0 defeat to
Catania on Sunday.
Nicola Legrottaglie gave Catania victory over Champions League-chasing Lazio thanks to a goal 10 minutes from time from time.
Legrottaglie struck towards the end of a game that had looked to be heading for a stalemate.
The visitors were unlucky not to equalise at the death when Catania midfielder Francesco Lodi deflected Stefano Mauri's cross off his own post.
Napoli came from two goals down to claim a point in a draw with
Udinese at the Stadio Friuli.
Giampiero Pinzi put the home side ahead in the 28th minute with Antonio Di Natale doubling their advantage early in the second half.
Diego Fabbrini was sent off after an hour and Udinese failed to defend their lead with 10 men as two goals from Edinson Cavani, who also missed a penalty, earned Napoli a point.
Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin was also sent off in a tense finale with the draw helping both sides move to just a point behind Lazio in the race for third.
Inter Milan failed to close the gap themselves on the European places after a goalless home draw with
Atalanta.
Diego Milito missed a penalty midway through the first half, but Inter never looked settled in a scrappy encounter.
Atalanta should have been given a spot-kick of their own late on, but they will nevertheless be happy with the draw, which keeps them at a safe distance from the relegation zone.
Lecce remain third from bottom after being held to a 1-1 home draw with
Palermo, a game in which both sides finished with 10 men.
When David di Michele put the home side ahead with a fifth-minute penalty it appeared that Serse Cosmi's men were well placed to close the gap between them and those above the safety line.
But, when Ezequiel Munoz levelled 10 minutes later, Palermo were level and, even though both sides ended the game with 10 men after the first-half sendings off of Massimo Oddo and Nicolas Bertolo, there were no further goals.
Such an eventuality does little to help the Giallorossi, who are now five points behind Parma and safety.
Novara have moved to within three points of Lecce after getting the better of
Siena 2-0 away from home.
Second-half goals from Marco Rigoni and Filippo Porcari sealed the three-point hail for the visitors.
Mauricio Pinilla's hat-trick earned
Cagliari all three points and sent
Cesena even closer towards Serie B with a 3-0 victory at the Stadio Sant'Elia.
Pinilla opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added two more from the penalty spot as Cesena fell apart, losing both Giuseppe Colucci and Marco Rossi to red cards in the second half.
The win lifts the Sardinians into mid-table, leaving Cesena 14 points adrift of safety with 10 games remaining.
The points were shared in
Bologna's clash with
Chievo as the teams played out a 2-2 draw.
Marco Di Vaio cancelled out Marco Andreolli's opener and while Cyril Thereau put Chievo ahead for the second time Alessandro Diamanti had the final say.
