Roma president Jim Pallotta has been charged by UEFA for his comments following his side's Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool.
Pallotta criticised a number of the referee's decisions after Roma's 4-2 win at the Stadio Olimpico - which resulted in the Italian side losing 7-6 on aggregate - labelling the manner of their European exit "embarrassing".
Roma felt they should have been awarded a penalty on several different occasions during the game, and Pallotta suggested his side could have made the final at Liverpool's expense had decisions gone their way.
He said: "It is very clear VAR is needed in the Champions League because you just can't let stuff like this happen.
"You can all look at it yourself. (Edin) Dzeko in the 49th minute wasn't offside and he gets taken down by the goalie; the 63rd minute was a handball that was obvious to everyone probably in the world except people on the pitch; the 67th minute [Patrik] Schick gets taken down in the box.
"I know it is difficult to referee but it is really embarrassing that we lose on aggregate like that.
"Liverpool are a great team, congratulations going forward, but if they don't get VAR in the Champions League stuff like this is an absolute joke."
UEFA have charged Pallotta with "improper conduct" and a disciplinary panel will judge the American's case on May 31.
