Diego Simeone says Atletico Madrid must try the impossible after Champions League loss

Diego Simeone

Diego Simeone admits Atletico Madrid must "try to achieve the impossible" when they face Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final second leg.

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick secured a 3-0 first-leg win for Real on Tuesday night, putting them in the driving seat ahead of the return fixture at the Vicente Calderon next Wednesday.

None of the previous five teams to lose by three or more goals at this stage of the competition have progressed from the tie.

And Simeone admits his side face a herculean task in their bid to reach a third final in four years.

"They took the first part of the tie, but now there's the second," he told reporters after the match.

"We need to forget about this game. Now we have to try to do something impossible, but as we call ourselves Atletico Madrid, we are possibly capable.

"It's very complicated, but it's football. Football has unexpected things that make it marvellous.
