Real Madrid were awarded a controversial penalty against Villarreal as the referee deemed the ball to struck Bruno Soriano's hand

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a controversial penalty as Real Madrid recovered from two goals down to beat Villarreal 3-2 on Sunday night.

The Portuguese star struck an equaliser from the spot after 74 minutes of the La Liga clash, after Bruno Soriano appeared to handle the ball in the area after Victor Ruiz's block on a Toni Kroos shot jumped up and hit the Villarreal captain.

The home side, who had led through goals from Manu Trigueros and Cedric Bakambu before Gareth Bale pulled one back for Real, were incensed by the referee's decision, while manager Fran Escriba was dismissed from the touchline after remonstrating with the officials.

Alvaro Morata then headed home the winner late on as Real went back above Barcelona to the top of the table.
