Friday night's Scottish Cup tie between Cowdenbeath and Rangers has been postponed because of a frozen pitch.

The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 30.

Rangers new boys Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis had been due to make their debuts against the Scottish League Two side - but will now have to wait for next Wednesday's Scottish Premiership trip to Kilmarnock.

Rangers announced on Twitter: "As a result of the freezing temperatures, the Scottish Cup fixture at Cowdenbeath has been postponed, following a late pitch inspection.

"Despite the best efforts of the Cowdenbeath groundstaff, the pitch was deemed to be unplayable."

Local referee Scott Millar is understood to have made the decision after being called in for a late pitch inspection.

Cowdenbeath secretary David Allan said: "We put the covers on the pitch on Wednesday, but the problem was there was a big gale which lifted a couple of the sheets off and exposed two or three areas to the cold.

"We put the covers back on but the areas exposed are the side of the pitch, which does not get much sun.

"We did various things today to ensure the pitch was playable but there are two areas which are just too hard.

"The referee will not be a popular man I guess, but I don't blame him. He had a difficult job and I made sure no one from either side went out to influence him."
