Harry Panayiotou scored a last-gasp equaliser at Starks Park to deny Rangers promotion to the Scottish Premiership, following a thrilling 3-3 draw with Raith Rovers.

As the seconds ticked away in Fife, the travelling fans began to celebrate a return to the top flight knowing a Rangers victory - along with Hibernian's failure to win at St Mirren - would be enough for the Light Blues to secure both the Scottish Championship title and promotion.

And with 93 minutes on the clock, the dream was still alive as Hibernian were drawing 2-2 at Love Street while the Gers led by the odd goal in five.

But with just seconds remaining, Panayiotou bundled the ball home from close range, following a scramble, to put celebrations on hold.

With five games still to play, Mark Warburton's side will enjoy a double celebration if they beat Dumbarton at home next Tuesday.

After 24 minutes of little goalmouth action, Raith striker Louis Longridge broke the deadlock with a superb 25-yard drive.

Yet Rangers were on level terms within five minutes when, from Barrie McKay's corner, Harry Forrester dived to score his fifth goal in his last seven games.

And Forrester turned provider on 35 minutes when his cross was met by Michael O'Halloran, who tapped home from close range.

However, from Iain Davidson's assist, James Craigen equalised for the hosts just three minutes later with a low strike from the edge of the box which keeper Wes Foderingham should have saved.

But Rangers were back in front, four minutes into the second half, as Andy Halliday fed Kenny Miller and the veteran striker netted with a rising shot.

When news arrived from Love Street, just before the hour mark, that Hibs had fallen behind, the visiting fans began to realise that the title - and more importantly promotion to the Scottish Premiership - was finally within touching distance.

That was the way it remained until the 90th minute when Rob Kiernan fouled Panayiotou in the box and referee Euan Anderson pointed to the spot.

But when Foderingham dived to his left to save Panayiotou's penalty, it seemed Rangers had been reprieved.

However, just a few moments later Panayiotou was the villain turned hero as he bundled in the game's sixth goal and the visitors' champagne had to be put back on ice.

Meanwhile, St Mirren and Hibernian drew 2-2. Jason Cummings fired the visitors in front from 12 yards on 27 minutes, only for the hosts to equalise eight minutes later through Rocco Quinn, who blasted home from close range.

Two minutes from time the Edinburgh club snatched a point with Farid El Alagui latching on to an Anthony Stokes assist.

And the scoreline was the same at Palmerston Park where Queen of the South drew with second placed Falkirk.

John Baird and Lee Miller had efforts saved for the Bairns and Doonhammers respectively, before Falkirk grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time when Blair Alston headed home a Will Vaulks cross.

And seven minutes into the second half it was 2-0, with Vaulks once again the provider - this time for Baird.

But Falkirk battled back to snatch a point. With 17 minutes remaining, Derek Lyle reduced the arrears before Iain Russell grabbed a point in injury time.

Both of the other matches in the division ended goalless. Dumbarton drew with Morton at The Bet Butler Stadium, where there were no shortage of chances.

And, in West Lothian, bottom of the table Alloa drew with Livingston. The visitors ended the match with 10 men after Steven Hetherington was shown a red card four minutes from time.

With 93 minutes on the clock, Mark Fotheringham came close to snatching a winner only to see his close-range effort saved by Alloa keeper Scott Gallacher.

The action now moves to Ibrox in midweek when Rangers will hope to celebrate on their home ground, after being seconds from glory in Kirkcaldy.
