Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has been suspended for two weeks following his Twitter outburst prior to Sunday's match at Inverness, Sky sources understand.

The Republic of Ireland international travelled with the Hoops squad to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium but did not even make the bench for the Scottish Premiership fixture, which Celtic won 3-1.

Stokes vented his anger on social media, writing: "Buzzing to be brought all the way up to Inverness with the team to sit in the stands today. Lovely weather for it too." He then went on to add: "It's all about playing and contributing not picking up a wage."

Boss Ronny Deila described the 27-year-old's comments, which also included a swear word, as disrespectful to his team-mates and the player later apologised. But that has failed to save him from being punished by the club, although there has been no official comment.

Deila said on Sunday: "I pick the team and the squad and we are always 20 players leaving to different places. We are a team and that is important.

"Ninety-nine other times, it has been other players out and it is his time this day and, of course, they are not the values that we want. If that is harder for him than somebody else, then for me he is not a team player.

"What is important with Stokesy is that he has to show the work first before he speaks and if you do that then you always have a future."

Anthony Stokes should follow the example of Leigh Griffiths at Celtic, according to Tom Boyd...

Stokes, who has been linked with a move away from Celtic, has made only two appearances this season, the last of which came in a 3-1 win at Dundee United in August.

After Sunday's game, he was in a more contrite mood, tweeting: "Sorry for earlier tweet. Hope fans can appreciate my frustration, heat of the moment."
