Hearts have signed former Leeds and Barnsley defender Aidy White on a contract until 2021.

Craig Levein and his staff have been tracking the 27-year-old for the past year and the out-of-contract player has now made the move to the Scottish Premiership side.

Left-back White came through the youth system at Leeds and featured over 100 times for them, as well as having loan spells with Oldham and Sheffield United.

A brief period at Rotherham followed before Barnsley signed him, with White winning the Football League Trophy and the League One Play-Off Final with the Tykes in 2016.

White, who previously captained the Republic of Ireland U21s, was sidelined by a groin injury in 2017 but he has now been given the opportunity to rebuild his career at Tynecastle.

"We've been in dialogue with Aidy for a year and feel that now is the right time to bring him in," Levein told the Jambos' official website.

"He's got a lot of work to do in order to reach the level we think he's capable of but I'm confident he can fulfil his potential and prove to be a vital cog in the wheel as we look towards the future."
