Dick Advocaat hopes former club Rangers will pick the "right" candidate in their manager search and said Derek McInnes was "a real professional" as a player.
The Netherlands manager is back in Scotland ahead of the international friendly between the sides at Pittodrie on Thursday, live on Sky Sports, and confirmed he will step down as national team boss following Tuesday's game against Romania after failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Advocaat also admitted he has kept across the latest developments at Rangers, whom he managed from 1998 to 2001.
McInnes played under Advocaat during his spell as a player in Govan and is the bookmakers' favourite to fill the managerial vacancy at Ibrox following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha, with the Dutchman keen to see Rangers get the appointment right.
"I know they sacked their manager, they are looking for a new manager so let's wait and see - hopefully they will find the right one," Advocaat told Sky Sports News.
"I know him [McInnes] as a player - he was a good player, a real professional but I don't know him as a coach, that's totally different."
Advocaat only lost once at Pittodrie during his spell at Rangers and said he was enjoying being back in Scotland.
"I have always said that my period with Rangers was my best period," he added. "The family really enjoyed staying in Glasgow and working at Rangers.
"Somebody told me that most of the time we were beating Aberdeen, so I'll take that feeling with me tomorrow."
