Swindon Town have appointed Tim Sherwood as their new director of football.

It is just over a year since the 47-year-old was dismissed as Aston Villa boss.

The former Tottenham manager had been linked with the vacant post at QPR but has instead moved to the Sky Bet League One side and was presented to the media on Thursday afternoon.

After securing a new five-year deal in March, head coach Luke Williams will continue in his role at the club, who are struggling in 21st spot in League One having won just one of their last 10 games in all competitions.

Sherwood said: "I've had other offers but it's an interesting project I've had a close eye on for four years since I started loaning players to this club. I've had a lot of discussions with a lot of clubs but I'm happy to be sat here.

"Lee is a very good coach and he's got a lot more to come. The team needs tweaking - the style of play sometimes - and I think i can give Lee a helping hand with that.

"I think we need to play direct sometimes, give the opposition something else to think about or play to the strengths of the squad.

"I like this club. I've got a soft spot for it. This is a good opportunity for me to get back onto the training field. I started this morning. I'll be in the dressing room, I'll be talking to the boys and giving them some words of wisdom.

"We need everyone on side, to come back through those gates, to help the boys out. Let's make sure we stay in the league and start climbing up the table."

Sherwood played with Robins chairman Lee Power at Norwich and had previously helped send players to the County Ground on loan when at Tottenham.

During his eight months at Villa Park, Sherwood steered the team to the FA Cup final before he was sacked in October 2015 with the club rooted to the foot of the Premier League.
