Brentford midfielder Alan Judge will undergo surgery after suffering a broken leg at Portman Road on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was down for eight minutes, and required oxygen, before being stretchered off following a heavy challenge from Luke Hyam of Ipswich.

Judge recently made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly international against Switzerland but will now be absent from this summer's Euro 2016 finals. The Dublin-born player is expected to undergo surgery over the next couple of days.

The incident occurred inside the opening few minutes of the match which Brentford went on to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Sam Saunders and two from Lasse Vibe.

Bees manager Dean Smith, speaking about the incident before confirmation of the injury, said: "I heard something but I am hoping it was a shin pad rather than the crack of a bone. I thought it was a naughty tackle and it should have been a red card."

A statement, issued by Brentford once the full extent of the damage was confirmed, reads: "The injury was assessed and immobilised locally and Alan has now been transferred to a London hospital where he will be managed by the leading lower limb consultant in the country.

"The nature of his management and long-term prognosis cannot be speculated on at this time, however it should be stated that a full recovery is not in question.

"Alan and his family will receive our fullest support and further comment will be provided as we're able to over the coming days."

Hyam, who was booked for the challenge, later saw red after retaliating to a foul by Ryan Woods.
