But Rotherham released a statement on Monday which read: "Following a meeting between the chairman and manager this morning, it was decided Rotherham United would part company with first team manager Steve Evans and his assistant Paul Raynor.

"During the said meeting, it became clear that both parties at the present time wished to head in a different direction.

"The meeting was at all times positive, constructive and straightforward. It was clear that the chairman and the management team only wanted what they felt was best for Rotherham United.

"Moving on, Eric Black will assume first-team duties for the time being.

"It has all come as a surprise but Rotherham United must move forward and the search for a new first team manager will begin immediately. Replacing Steve Evans and Paul Raynor will indeed be a strenuous task for the board.

"Rotherham United will always welcome Steve and Paul, whether as an opposition management team, or as supporters of our fantastic football club."

Evans took charge at Rotherham in April 2012 when they were still in League Two and led them to a second-place finish and automatic promotion the following season.

And the Millers were then promoted once again, when they won the League One play-off final against Leyton Orient on penalties at the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

Evans then guided Rotherham to Championship survival last season, famously celebrating by donning a sombrero and beach attire for their final game of the campaign.

His departure will come as a huge shock to fans of the club, particularly coming after Saturday's 2-0 win at Birmingham took the Millers away from the bottom three.

Stuart Gray and Neil Redfearn have emerged as the early favourites in Sky Bet's next Rotherham manager betting, having left their respective roles at Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds in the summer.
