Bournemouth's Adam Smith has revealed referee Jon Moss apologised to him and admitted he should have awarded a penalty after booking the midfielder for diving against Southampton.
Smith was given his fifth yellow card this season, and will miss the next game without a successful appeal, after Moss adjudged him to have simulated a foul in the box by Sofiane Boufal during Sunday's 1-1 draw with the Saints, live on Sky Sports.
A disappointed Smith believes a successful conversion of that spot-kick midway through the first half would have put the Cherries in a strong position to win the game, with the scoreline sitting at 0-0 at the time.
"I've seen him coming and I've just got to the ball before him. I've jumped to go over it and he took me down," Smith told Sky Sports.
"So for the ref to book me is disappointing. It doesn't help because that's my fifth yellow card and I miss the next game. I don't know if we can rescind it or not. It's very disappointing.
"I spoke to him after and he apologised and said it was a penalty. I don't mind him admitting it but the fact he's booked me as well, and it's probably not going to get rescinded is disappointing for me.
"At the time we were doing really well. We were on top of them. I felt if we'd have got that penalty we'd have gone on and scored another one. It would have changed the game."
Cherries boss Eddie Howe concurred, stating: "I'm amazed it wasn't given and it's had a knock-on effect for us because now Adam is suspended for the next game. I think it's a really poor decision."
