Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe bemoaned a lack of discipline from Harry Arter after he was sent-off in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to West Ham.
Arter was cautioned for dissent under new Premier League rules in the first half before a second booking in the 78th minute for bringing down Cheikhou Kouyate on a Hammers counter-attack.
It left Bournemouth with 10 men for the remaining 12 minutes and they failed to hold on as Michail Antonio's header sealed all three points late on in West Ham's first league game at the London Stadium.
Howe told Sky Sports. ""It was a tight game. There was nothing in it, a game of few chances.
"I thought we were much improved in the second half. It was our game for the taking but for one lapse of discipline I think possibly we could have won it.
"The first booking is the disappointing one. The second one you are never going to stop people going in for tackles.
"We've all been told about the new rules for dissent and referees are clamping down on that and we know there will be yellow cards. We have to do better on that."
Bournemouth almost grabbed an equaliser in injury-time when Josh King saw a close-range shot kept out by Adrian and Simon Francis' effort was cleared off the line by Winston Reid.
And Howe, whose side have now lost their opening two matches of the Premier League season, was pleased with how the visitors kept going right until the final whistle.
"The pleasing thing is we never gave up despite having only 10 men," Howe said.
"How we didn't score at the end I will never know. It's disappointing but we have to brush ourselves down quickly.
"It's not difficult to pick ourselves up. We have to do that because we've been here before.
"We lost our first two games last season so we know the harsh nature of the decision. But we have to grow very quickly because the games don't get any easier."
