Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe fears Callum Wilson could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the striker was forced off injured in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Stoke.
The 23-year-old - who has been touted as a possible England player after scoring five Premier League goals this season - was taken off early in the first half on a stretcher and needed oxygen after twisting his knee.
Speaking after his side conceded a late Mame Biram Diouf winner at the Britannia Stadium, Howe said he expects the striker - who was due to undergo a scan on Sunday - to need surgery.
"I don't know too much but he took a bang to the knee. He tried to carry on but he collapsed in agony," Howe said. "He's got a knee brace on, it doesn't look good."
Any serious problem for Wilson would be a huge blow to Howe, who has already lost Tyrone Mings and Max Gradel to long-term injuries this season.
"With our luck this season we fear it's going to need an operation and a long-term injury," Howe added. "But until we know for sure we can't guess."
Asked about the decision that saw Wilson briefly back on the field, Howe said: "I think Callum felt his knee was okay at that stage, and you are really in the hands of the player - he wanted to carry on, such is his nature.
"The physios were obviously aware there could be a potential injury there and they relayed their concerns to him, but he felt he was strong, able and fit enough to carry on.
"Obviously that wasn't the case, and it was a real key moment in the game."
