Brighton have confirmed that assistant manager Colin Calderwood has resigned from his role.

A statement on the club's website said the Scotsman had decided to leave the Sky Bet Championship high-flyers in order to "take up a new position elsewhere".

Their statement added: "He was placed on gardening leave on November 12 to serve his notice period."

Calderwood has a seven-year working relationship with Brighton manager Chris Hughton and, when he arrived at the AMEX Stadium in February 2015, it marked the fourth time they had worked together after spells at Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Norwich City.

The 51-year-old has been widely linked with the assistant managerial vacancy at Aston Villa, with Steve Bruce yet to fill that role since his arrival last month.

Calderwood's departure comes a day before Brighton and Villa go head-to-head in front of the Sky Sports cameras on the south coast.
