Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner discusses how hard it is for his side to compete with the Premier League financial elite

Huddersfield manager David Wagner believes he will face his toughest job yet if the club remain in the Premier League due to competing with the division's financial elite.

Huddersfield were promoted to the Premier League last year after they beat Reading in the play-off final on penalties.

Wagner's side are battling relegation as the season enters the final stretch and remain four points above the drop zone ahead of their match against Watford on Saturday.

When asked if it was harder to gain promotion or stay in the Premier League he said: "To be totally honest I think for a football club like us both [promotion into Premier League and staying in it] are usually impossible.

"However, one has happened and one could happen.

"This is why I think if you see on one side how many big names and clubs with financial power try to get promoted [from the Championship] but at the end only three can be successful, this is very difficult.

"On the other side, what financial power the Premier League has and we are in competition as Huddersfield Town with clubs owned by multi-billionaires and clubs who are more or less owned by countries.

"This is competition, I cannot say it is unfair because of course it is fair it is a competition, where there is such a huge gap in the circumstances everybody has to work with.

"You think how should this work? It is not possible, but it can work. I am not really sure, I said a long time before maybe promotion is more difficult but I am unsure if this is really the truth.

"Maybe if we stay in the league, with a club like us, with our size, our background, with our history and our circumstances I'd say probably this is more difficult."

In their previous fixture against Watford in December, Huddersfield secured their first Premier League away win since the opening weekend when Marco Silva was still in charge.

Since then, Javi Gracia has taken over the role and Wagner has called on the fans to back the team as much as they can at the John Smith's Stadium.

"Usually I say to the fans, we need to turn up but now this week, they have to be there for us," he added. "It's a big game and maybe they can give us that little bit more but hopefully they won't need to if we play well."
