Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner was pleased with his players' performances against Liverpool but admits that they deserved to lose in the end

David Wagner admits his Huddersfield side deserved their defeat as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners at Anfield.

Huddersfield's defensive outlook became clear early on, and Liverpool could not find the breakthrough before half-time, with Jonas Lossl saving from Mohamed Salah's penalty.

However, a Tommy Smith header gifted Daniel Sturridge the first goal after 50 minutes, with Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum putting the game beyond Huddersfield.

"In the end, it was a deserved defeat," Wagner said. "But for me, the idea of our game worked until we conceded a very unlucky first goal.

"We did not have the best position to defend the long ball and we gave the assist for the first goal, and then conceded the second from a corner.

"Until the first goal, I haven't seen Anfield as quiet as it was today very often. I was often here in the last two years.

"This has shown how well organised my players were today. I think we gave very little away, the penalty I have no idea what the referee has seen.

"But apart from that, the players defended very well but without the opportunities in offence.

"If you want to steal a point here, then you have to make it from the first to the final whistle, but we were unable to deliver it today. They came to their fluid offensive game after scoring the first goal."

Huddersfield remain without an away goal in the league since the first day of the season, but with four points on the road, Wagner is not deterred.

The Terriers boss reiterated that their first-half display proved they can quell bigger teams, but it's doing so over 90 minutes - as they did last weekend over Manchester United - that really counts.

"Every experience here in the Premier League helps us, we have no experience. Every game brings us forward, this one as well," Wagner added.

"We have seen that we can neutralise a team, but have seen that you have to get everything right. We did that last weekend, but not today. "
