Dario Gradi suspended by Football Association, Sky sources understand

Dario Gradi

Sky sources understand Crewe's director of football Dario Gradi has been suspended by the FA as part of its wider review into historical allegations in football.

It is understood the FA will question Gradi, who has denied any wrongdoing, and the 75-year-old said last week he would help the governing body's review, which will run alongside police investigations now including 21 forces.

The FA is yet to comment on Gradi's suspension and claims made that he "smoothed over" a complaint against a Chelsea scout in the 1970s while he was assistant manager at Stamford Bridge.

And Gradi, when approached by Sky News, also refused to comment on the reported suspension.

Former Chelsea head scout Eddie Heath, who died in the 1980s, has been the subject of several more accusations since the child sex abuse scandal in British football was brought into the spotlight by former Crewe player Andy Woodward last month.

The game's domestic governing body has the power to suspend anyone if it feels that to be the most appropriate action.

In a statement issued before reports of the suspension were published, Gradi said: "Aside from denying any wrongdoing, it would be inappropriate and unfair on all parties to comment piecemeal through the media at this time in connection with historical allegations.

"Suffice to say, I will do everything within my power to assist all investigatory authorities into what is becoming a wide-ranging and important enquiry into historical sexual abuse."
