Swansea have added to their midfield options by signing highly promising youngster Matt Grimes from Exeter for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old has completed his medical and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract but he will not be eligible to play for the Swans until their Premier League match against West Ham on January 10.

Grimes has made 62 appearances for Exeter since breaking into the team last season and was called up by the England U20 side earlier this term.

Exeter’s reigning player of the year, he had been linked with several Premier League clubs and former Tottenham man Steve Perryman thinks he has a very bright future.

Perryman, who is director of football at Exeter, said in December: “I saw a young Glenn Hoddle emerge and this is another world but Matt is a talent.

“I don’t think I’ve been as excited about a young player at any club I’ve been involved with.”

Grimes may get an early chance to impress at his new club because Jonjo Shelvey is serving a four-match ban, while Ki Sung-Yueng is heading away on international duty.

The arrival of Grimes at Swansea follows the capture of Portugal international forward Nelson Oliveira, who has joined on loan from Benfica until the end of the season.
