Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has admitted new manager Carlos Carvalhal will have to rely on money raised from player sales if he wants to make new signings in the January transfer window.

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Carvalhal was appointed on Thursday with Swansea lying bottom of the Premier League, five points from safety.

At his unveiling yesterday, Carvalhal said he had not discussed whether he would have funds available to strengthen the squad with the Swansea hierarchy, but Jenkins has now shed light on the situation.

When asked whether the club's American owners Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien would provide the new manager with funds, Jenkins told The Guardian: "No, there's no money put in at this time to do that."

Swansea sold key players Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente in the summer, which helped the club to make a net profit of £19.5m from the transfer window - the highest in the league.

Despite signing six new players in the summer, Jenkins said: "With more time probably we would have made different decisions."

Jenkins also admitted he felt Paul Clement - Carvalhal's successor - should have been replaced sooner, saying: "Timing-wise, I think we could have done it quicker."

Furthermore, the 54-year-old also expressed his regret at failing to reappoint Brendan Rodgers as Swansea manager when he had the chance in the summer of 2016.

He said: "My biggest regret is not getting Brendan back here at any cost. I'm not going to hide from that."
