Leon Britton admitted his concerns for Swansea after an "unacceptable" performance against Liverpool on Boxing Day.
Having trailed 1-0 at half-time, the game slipped away from Swansea in the second half as several errors led to a 5-0 defeat that leaves them bottom of the Premier League table and five points from safety.
Britton, who has been with the club for 15 years, is in temporary charge following the sacking of Paul Clement last week.
He told Sky Sports: "It's been a worrying time because we are bottom of the league and the situation we are in. Of course I am worried because I have been at the club a long time, it's been 15 years of hard work to get us where we are and today it felt like the players didn't do all the hard work that has gone before.
"It's a worrying situation. We have to keep going, whether that's myself or someone else. We have to give everything we have got because if we don't it will be a very long second half of the season."
Britton was also critical of the performance, saying: "After conceding so early in the first half we grew into the game and got our confidence up a bit but in the second half after conceding the second goal the confidence completely went.
"We were making basic errors, all the basic things in football that you are expected to do on the pitch we didn't do and I spoke with the players in the changing room and said the performance in the second half was not acceptable.
"Confidence is low with the position we are in. The second goal killed all belief in the players but you are still a professional and you have to go right to the end whether you believe you can get back into the game or not.
"There were so many basic errors out there and things that are drilled into you as a kid which we didn't do in the second half. It's very disappointing to see and I can only apologise to the fans who have travelled over this festive period. We have to dust ourselves down and get on with the game against Watford on Saturday."
It is not yet clear whether Britton will be charge against Watford or if a new manager will be in place.
"We need some fresh faces," added Britton. "The players have not performed as we wanted because we are where we are, so we need some fresh players to come in.
"It's always difficult to get players in when you are bottom of the league because players will always be looking at their own situation and where we are. We need fresh faces to give us a lift, everyone at the club needs a lift so it will be a big January."
