New Burton boss Nigel Clough is hoping to join former Brewers managers Gary Rowett and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the Championship next season.

Burton have confirmed Nigel Clough's return as manager almost seven years after the end of his first spell in charge.

Clough succeeds new QPR boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who secured promotion last season and left for Loftus Road with Albion top of League One.

The 49-year-old spent more than a decade at the Pirelli Stadium before moving to Derby in 2009 and went on to manage Sheffield United.

He said: "It's wonderful to be back at Burton Albion again, working with the chairman Ben Robinson and his staff, who make this club so special.

"We're looking forward to trying to maintain the remarkable success the club is enjoying."

Clough takes over a team that are two points clear at the top of the table and he admits it is an unusual situation.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: "It's a unique situation, it certainly is, and it's a different set of challenges. That was one of our concerns as when you are top of the league then there is really only one place you can go.

"It will be perceived from the outside as failure if we finish halfway up the table. If they had said that at the start of the season they would have snapped your hand off, but we are going to do everything we can to keep them in the position they are in now."

Robinson said: "We have enjoyed a great start to the season under Jimmy and his assistant David Oldfield, and Nigel Clough is the ideal man to continue that work.

"He has a tremendous track record in football as both a player and a manager and during a 10-year spell at Eton Park, and then the Pirelli Stadium, has already shown his tremendous passion and commitment for Burton Albion.

"We are delighted to welcome him back."
