Hull City boss Mike Phelan says he is already planning to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

The transfer window is still more than six weeks away but Phelan - who has lost Will Keane for the rest of the season to injury - is making plans, despite uncertainty over who will own the club by then.

"The January transfer window is not that far away and preparations by all clubs are under way in terms of what they can do and what they can't do," he said.

"Speculation over the takeover has been going on for some time now. That will happen when it happens. I just want to keep preparing the players. I'm in constant contact with the owners.

"They've not mentioned anything to me other than to keep doing what you're doing and let's see where we are around the end of December going into January. Business will get done but we are short in certain departments and we want to add to that."

Hull beat Southampton 2-1 in their last Premier League match and Phelan is hoping to make it two straight wins at Sunderland - who are bottom of the table - on Saturday.

"We've proven we can win in this division. It's been difficult at times but what the boys did was terrific," he said.

"They dug in and sometimes they have to do that. This league has a habit of punish you but you always believe a win is round the corner.

"Sunderland have done that now [they won for the first time this season at Bournemouth last time out] so we have two teams on the up.

"I haven't really paid much attention to any other club other than this because there's a lot been going on here. Sunderland have had ups and downs, and David Moyes is handling it as well as he can. I'm sure he's trying to put some foundation in there that can only improve Sunderland."
