Leicester City have made an approach for Italy international defender Francesco Acerbi, Sky sources understand.

Claudio Ranieri has targeted a new centre back as a priority ahead of the January transfer window and Leicester have reportedly contacted Sassuolo for permission to speak with the 28-year-old.

However, the Premier League champions could face stiff competition for his signature as Inter Milan are thought to have renewed their interest in the player after having bids rejected during the summer.

Acerbi has made over 100 appearances for the Serie A side and helped them finish sixth last season to secure European football.

The Lombardy-born defender has won two Italy caps and started his career with Pavia before moving to Reggina, Genoa and then Sassuolo, with loan stints at Chievo and Milan.

He has twice battled testicular cancer during his playing career and has been a regular presence in Sassuolo's defence since making a full recovery.

Acerbi is expected to command a transfer fee of around £11m, with sources close to the player suggesting he would be interested in a move to a bigger club, to enhance his international prospects.
