Alex Neil frustrated after Norwich 'chuck point away'

Alex Neil was left frustrated after failures at "crucial moments" cost Norwich a point at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

The Canaries looked to have earned a draw when Cameron Jerome capitalised on a Joe Hart error to cancel out Nicolas Otamendi's 67th minute header.

But Yaya Toure dispatched a late penalty after Norwich captain Russell Martin was sent off for handling Raheem Sterling's goal-bound shot.

Norwich changed their shape for the trip to the Etihad Stadium, and for more than an hour it looked to be working as Neil's side kept the free-scoring Premier league leaders at bay. But poor marking allowed Otamendi to put City in front, before John Ruddy's error resulted in a red card and spot-kick.

"Ultimately, people have to do their jobs, and if they don't then it will cost you games," Neil told Norwich City TV.

"It's been the story of the last two weeks, it's not as if it's anything new. Today we set up completely differently and we had arguably the two best chances in the first half with Matt Jarvis' shot and Alex Tettey's from the corner.

"When you come away to these types of places, if you're going to get beaten then you want it to be via a bit of quality from the opposition.

"Then you can hold your hands up and say that it's something a bit special, but today it wasn't like that."

The Norwich manager was happy with large passages of play from his side, and they looked to be growing into the game before Otamendi's powerful header put City ahead mid-way through the second half.

But the defeat makes it four in a row in the Premier League, and the Canaries need to arrest a worrying slide towards the relegation zone.

"It's about those crucial moments in games when you either need to take a chance or save a chance," Neil added. "At this moment in time, the vast majority of our game is good, but those crucial moments are costing us points and it's extremely frustrating.

"The bottom line is that we'll move on to the next one, now we need to get ourselves ready for that. Every game is big for us.

"The disappointing thing is that chucked a point away today with a minute to go, but ultimately we need to go next week to try and gain some points."

Goal-scorer Jerome also pinpointed "silly errors" as the cause of Norwich's late disappointment, and the striker believes the team must take collective responsibility for the mistakes that have contributed to their recent poor run of form.

"It's something we worked on in the week, we know what a good team they have got," Jerome added. "We knew we couldn't match fire with fire, we had a game-plan and we nearly executed the perfect game-plan.

"But it's the same old story, we are playing well in games but individual mistakes and silly errors are costing us. You have to somehow take some positives but you need to cut out those things that are costing you.

"You don't want to pick anybody out, it's a team thing. We wouldn't mind if somebody put one in from 30 yards, or Manchester City carved us open, but that didn't happen."
