Crystal Palace have confirmed that defender Pape Souare was injured in a car accident on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Senegal international was involved in a two-way crash in his Mercedes on the M4 near Heathrow Airport and was airlifted to hospital in London.

He has sustained injuries to his thigh and jaw bone, according to Palace, and will remain in hospital while he receives treatment.

"The club are liaising closely with the hospital on his progress and we obviously wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with Pape and his family at this time," read a statement on the club's website.

A statement issued by the Metropolitan Police read: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 motorway.

"Officers were called shortly before 12:10pm on Sunday, 11 September to reports of two cars in collision between junctions four and three.

"London Ambulance Service attended and the driver of one of the cars - a man aged in his 20s - was taken to an east London hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life threatening.

Alan Pardew felt Crystal Palace were good value for the win

Palace boss Alan Pardew revealed on Monday that Souare could have suffered a broken leg, but added he was thankful more damage had not been done to the defender in the accident.

"I'm due to see him shortly, he's not in a good way in terms of football because I think he's broke his leg maybe so that's not so good, but thankfully he looks sound other than that," said Pardew.

"He's a bit bashed up but we'll have to look after him and get him back as quick as we can. He's a great lad and a great player for us and he'll be a big loss.

"It's a blow but these things happen and more importantly it's not more than it could have been because obviously you see the state of the car and the size of the accident, it was a big accident."

Left-back Souare was not in the Palace squad for Saturday's 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough, although he has made four appearances for the club this season.

Souare joined the Eagles from French club Lille in January 2015 and has made a total of 55 first-team appearances.
