Patrick Bamford has returned to Chelsea following the early termination of his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Bamford was due to remain at Selhurst Park until the summer but struggled to make an impact and made just nine first-team appearances.

The 22-year-old failed to score during that spell and a clause in the deal which allowed it to be terminated during the January transfer window has now been exercised.

His final appearance was the goalless draw with Swansea City at Selhurst Park on December 28, after which he said: "This was my last game for Palace. If I were being honest, it has been terrible. No one wants to sit on the bench and not play."

Bamford clarified those comments in a post on Twitter, saying: "My comments after the game were taken out of context and for that I want to apologise.

"I couldn't have been at a nicer club, I'm just disappointed I couldn't do more for the club."

A Crystal Palace statement said: "The club would like to thank Patrick for his efforts during his time in SE25 and wish him the best in the future."

Bamford joined the Eagles in July and scored a pre-season hat-trick but has since started only two Capital One Cup ties and made just seven appearances in the league from the bench.
