Nantes striker Emiliano Sala is one of three signings Cardiff are targeting from France before the end of the transfer window, according to Sky sources.
Nice midfielder Adrien Tameze and a potential loan for Marseille winger Clinton N'Jie are the other two players that the Bluebirds are interested in bringing to the Premier League.
Cardiff have not given up on their pursuit of Sala - currently the third top-scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals - despite boss Neil Warnock admitting to doubts over whether a deal could be done last month.
It is understood Nantes are open to selling the 28-year-old and it is now down to Cardiff to convince him to move to south Wales.
Their next few Premier League results could prove crucial to this end, with the player thought to be reluctant to sign for a club that could end up playing Sky Bet Championship football next season.
Sky Sports News also understands Cardiff are in talks with Nice over a deal for the 24-year-old Tameze - a defensive-midfielder who has played for France at youth level but also qualifies to play for Cameroon at full international level.
Cardiff are believed to have enquired about former Tottenham man N'Jie too, who could be available on loan this month in order to get more regular games, with Burnley and Huddersfield also interested.
Warnock wants to strengthen his squad to keep the Welsh side in the top flight, but he spoke about the difficulties of doing so in late December, as he commented on the potential deal for Nantes' Sala.
"We're looking as best we can at where we can get players in but, at the moment, it looks very much like a loan market to us," he said. "But that might change.
"I think everything seems to change so dramatically at our club at times.
"I'd like to think I've got one close, but you just never know in the game. It's so difficult, the higher you go.
"The Championship was a little bit easier in January but in the Premier League, you've got to get the best in."
