Chris Porter's goal kept alive Colchester's slim survival chances and worsened Blackpool's relegation fears in a 1-0 victory at Bloomfield Road.
The visitors were much the sharper side in the first period and came close after 28 minutes when Elliot Lee cut in from the left and his goal-bound shot glanced inches wide off Tom Aldred's leg.
Blackpool had a great chance to snatch the lead on the stroke of half-time but Danny Philliskirk scuffed wide from 12 yards.
In the first minute of the second half, Gavin Massey came agonisingly close as his shot from 12 yards cannoned back off the base of a post before Porter forced a smart stop from goalkeeper Colin Doyle in the 55th minute.
And Colchester deservedly had their lead five minutes later. The ball broke to Porter in the area and he smashed home on the volley from 12 yards.
Blackpool pushed for an equaliser but were denied in the 87th minute when Jim McAlister's header from eight yards was held by goalkeeper Elliot Parish.
