Southampton were pegged back in their first pre-season friendly by a late Steven Skrzybski goal in a 3-3 draw with Schalke 04.
Saints named Stuart Armstrong, their new £7m signing from Celtic, in their starting line-up before changing all 11 players at the break with the score at 1-1.
Mark Hughes began with a strong side, with a number of Southampton's first-team players not away on World Cup duty, including Matt Targett, who has been the subject of a bid from newly-promoted Fulham.
Nathan Redmond brought them level just before half-time following a perfectly executed one-two with Charlie Austin, having initially trailed to Yevhen Konoplyanka's early finish.
Their second-half side flourished, Harrison Reed slotting in following a raking cross-field pass from Jordy Clasie, before Jake Hesketh's deflected finish put them back ahead once Suat Serdar had equalised.
But with seven minutes to go, Skrzybski's fizzing shot from outside the box restored parity for the third time, leaving the spoils shared at the end of Saints' first pre-season game.
