Claude Puel has dismissed suggestions Southampton will look to sell captain Jose Fonte in the January transfer window.

Fonte, who has just 18 months remaining on his contract at St Mary's, revealed on Wednesday he would not be offered an extended deal by the Saints.

The Portugal international defender, 32, is yet to feature for Southampton in the Europa League this season, leading to speculation his continued absence was due to the club's desire to offload him in the New Year.

But, ahead of Southampton's final group match against Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Puel said: "It's not true, about not playing so he can move in January.

"We prepare for an important game and for me it is only important to speak about the team and the game - other things concerning individuals is not part of the collective or important for me - about Jose or not."

When asked about Fonte's continued absence from the Europa League matches, the Southampton manager added: "He would have played against Sparta (Prague) but he had an injury.

"I am happy and satisfied about Maya Yoshida and we are lucky to have good centre backs in this team.

"The others deserve game time as well. It's all about balance with the other players. It's important to consider all the team."

The Saints currently sit second in Group K, level on seven points with their Israeli opponents, knowing that a victory or a goalless draw will be enough to see them qualify for the knockout phase.

Having overseen impressive home victories over group winners Sparta Prague and Inter Milan, Puel has called on his side to produce another stellar showing at St Mary's to ensure they book their place in the last 32 for the first time in the club's history.

"I'm confident my players can handle the pressure," Puel said. "The two teams have both got an opportunity in this game, because it is like a final.

"We have to give it our all. We are at home and we have showed we are strong with the support of the fans.

"We have to find the right balance with all of the players."
