Bristol City manager Lee Johnson was left seething after his side's agonising 2-1 Sky Bet Championship defeat at Wolves plunged them deeper into relegation danger.

Johnson accused Wolves central defender Danny Batth of unsporting behaviour for not playing a drop ball back to goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell after the game had been stopped when City's Luke Freeman was injured.

The ball went out of play for a throw in and moments later Wolves won a free-kick from which Matt Doherty headed home their injury time winner.

Before Doherty's intervention, City defender Aden Flint's 78th minute strike had cancelled out Nathan Byrne's opener for Wolves and that had looked set to earn them a priceless point in their battle against relegation.

Johnson said: "I was disappointed for a couple of incidents in the lead-up to the second goal and devastated to concede a goal in the final minute.

"It is frustrating and I am an angry man for a number of reasons. But I have got to settle and stay calm and controlled.

"At a big club like this (Wolves) you don't expect that they have to resort to unsporting behaviour.

"There is a drop ball in the middle of the pitch and the lad has said he is going to kick it back to the keeper and he smashes it out right in our corner and that puts us under pressure.

"You don't expect that, but that's life. You could say he has been clever and he is going home tonight having a nice little smile about it. But it is disappointing as you don't expect it from a club this size.

"I am really frustrated as the fans did not deserve to go home without a point. We were the side that looked like they were going to go on and win it.

"We were in the ascendancy and that incident changed the ascendancy from us having it to them having it from, in my opinion, unsporting behaviour.

"We didn't get the rub of the green, we didn't get the breaks and that is what is disappointing."

Wolves made the breakthrough when Byrne bundled the ball home from just a yard after a cross from Doherty. Flint pounced at the far post after an inch perfect cross from Joe Bryan brought Bristol City level.

Doherty's late header, when he converted Jeremy Helan's looping free-kick, settled in favour of Wolves. The win was just Wolves' second in 10 league games, but their second successive victory at home.

Manager Kenny Jackett took a different view to Johnson on the claim of unsporting behaviour and he said: "He (Johnson) was unhappy on the sidelines definitely. I wasn't quite sure what the expectation was.

"The ball went out for a throw in quite deep. It is splitting hairs really."

Jackett preferred to focus on the win and he added: "We had a good start to the second half and Michal Zyro made a difference when he came on at half-time.

"I thought we deserved and should have got a clean sheet out of the game and I was disappointed with their goal. We should have dealt with the cross better.

"But at 1-1 we found the key moment in injury time and it was a good quality ball in and Doherty was in the right place to earn us three points. It was a great header from Doherty.

"It is nice to get two good wins back-to-back at home against Derby and Bristol City.

"We are 12th in the league and we want to finish off the 10 games we have very strongly. There are positive signs and we have to build on that and try and establish a new team coming through."
