Tony Pulis was bewildered by Saido Berahino's miss in West Brom's 2-0 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday.
Substitute Berahino put a clear header from six yards over the bar with the score at 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining following Jesse Lingard's fine opener, before Juan Mata converted a penalty for 2-0 in stoppage time.
Despite insisting Berahino is the one player he would want a chance like that to fall to, Pulis was left to rue the missed opportunity having kept United out for the majority of the game.
He told Sky Sports: "We needed to keep it tight for the first 20 minutes of the second half, and as the game wore on we came more into it.
"That one chance you're hoping and praying for, it couldn't have dropped to anybody you'd want it to drop to more than Saido. How he's missed it I just don't know.
"I've just seen it on the TV and I don't know whether he's lost the flight as he seems to duck his head a little bit, you've just got to keep the head there and almost let it hit the bridge of your nose to keep it down."
West Brom restricted United to just three shots on target in the game, but failed to register one themselves in a game of little chances.
Pulis was disappointed with the result, but singled out former Manchester United players Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher for praise.
"Their first goal was disappointing to give away. I thought the shape of the team was very good, we restricted them to minimal opportunities," he added.
"We're disappointed, but the lads have worked really, really hard today. I thought Evans and Fletcher coming back to their old club were outstanding.
"It's just so disappointing because I think the players have put a lot into it and got nothing out of it again."
