Sunderland are appealing Didier Ndong's straight red card in Saturday's match against Cardiff.
The midfielder was dismissed four minutes into the second half for a reckless challenge on Junior Hoilett and it came soon after Cardiff scored the first goal in their 4-0 win.
Ndong, who will now serve a three-match ban, has already told Sunderland that he wants to leave this month and his punishment could have an impact on how much the club will receive for the Gabon international.
Watford are among the clubs reported to be interested in Ndong, but with the player unable to feature again until February - unless the appeal is successful - it could potentially reduce the price Sunderland can command.
Ndong's red card was part of a miserable return to Cardiff City Stadium for Sunderland boss Chris Coleman who enjoyed some special moments at the venue during his time as Wales manager.
It was Sunderland's worst defeat under Coleman and means they remain bottom of the Sky Bet Championship with just four wins from 27 games.
The result ended a run of four straight defeats for Cardiff - a fifth would have represented their worst sequence for 20 years - and resurrected their challenge at the other end of the table.
