Wahbi Khazri is in France for talks with Rennes over the possibility of a season-long loan from Sunderland.
The Tunisia international signed from French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux 18 months ago for £9m but has made it clear he does not want to play in the Championship.
Sunderland would have preferred to sell the winger permanently but so far only loan offers have arrived for the player.
But boss Simon Grayson remains hopeful of raising funds to allow him to make some late moves in the transfer market.
Khazri made 21 Premier League appearances for Sunderland last season and scored one goal.
