Sunderland boss David Moyes says his players didn't deserve to finish with a 5-1 defeat at Chelsea

David Moyes says Sunderland must rebuild in the Championship to secure a Premier League return after a season-ending defeat at Chelsea.

They lost 5-1 to the champions at Stamford Bridge and finished the campaign bottom of the league having won just six matches.

The visitors took a surprise lead through Javier Manquillo after three minutes but conceded to Willian shortly after and eventually slumped to a heavy loss.

"When I came in I think everyone said Sunderland needed rebuilding," Moyes told Sky Sports.

"It's been close to this position for four or five years and this time we've gone over the cliff. We have been relegated but we'll get ready and come back again."

When asked if the scoreline was unfair on Sunderland, he said: "I thought so. Goal five is definitely offside.

"Goal three is questionable so I don't think the players deserved to finish that way. They put in a good effort.

"Chelsea were the better team but I have to say they did everything they possibly could to contain them. In the end they were too good for us.

"On reflection, there's certainly one, possibly two, offside and at 3-1 we had put in a good effort and tried to make it difficult for Chelsea."

Moyes also confirmed he plans to hold talks with Sunderland owner Ellis Short next week to discuss his future at the club as they prepare for the Championship.

"I will chat with the owner over the next few days and we will see where we are," he added. "It will be me and him having a conversation. We've had a couple of conversations and we'll talk again this week.

"We want to come back. You have to try and do it quickly if you can, that's the best way.

"If not there are other clubs in the Championship who have done it another way, taking a bit of time to rebuild.

"Hopefully we will know a bit more in the next few days, get things in place and take it from there."
