David Moyes insisted his Sunderland team were "robbed" by the officials as they crashed out of the EFL Cup at Southampton.
Sofiane Boufal scored a sensational goal in the 66th-minute to settle Wednesday night's fourth-round clash at St Mary's, but might have had a late penalty when Victor Anichebe was felled by Maya Yoshida.
Referee Chris Kavanagh did not award the spot-kick and Moyes was sent to the stands for complaining to the fourth official about the decision.
And he was still angry after the match, insisting his players did not deserve to lose.
"We were robbed in the end not to get a penalty kick," he said. "The players didn't deserve to lose tonight.
"I have to say Southampton scored a worldy of a goal, but we didn't deserve to lose the game, that's for sure."
Despite his complaints over the decision, Moyes did not dispute his own sending off.
The Sunderland boss left his technical area and admitted to using bad language towards the fourth official.
"I rightly got sent off," he added.
"He was right to send me off because I left my box and swore. He was right to send me off and I have no problems with that."
