Match In A Minute: Phil Thompson's verdict on Southampton 1-1 Sunderland
Saturday 27 August 2016 20:55, UK
Phil Thompson brings you his verdict on the action at St Mary's as David Moyes' Sunderland draw 1-1 with Claude Puel's Southampton.
Sunderland earned their first Premier League point of the season after a 1-1 draw with Southampton at St Mary's.
Jermain Defoe scored from the penalty spot to give Moyes' side the lead in the 78th minute.
But Moyes was denied his first league win after substitute Jay Rodriguez's equaliser from long range after a mistake by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Moyes said fatigue and a gruelling early schedule has affected his players, telling Sky Sports after the game: "Considering we've played near enough the same players as on Sunday and midweek we've done remarkable to play the three games and get a point."
