Sunderland are in talks to sign defender Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan, according to Sky sources.
Manager David Moyes is keen to bolster his squad before the close of the summer transfer window and said following his side's 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough he was confident of making new signings ahead of the August 31 deadline.
Manquillo spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Liverpool, but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at Anfield under then-manager Brendan Rodgers and made just 10 Premier League appearances.
The 22-year-old, who had joined Liverpool on a two-year loan deal, was sent back after just a season following his unsuccessful spell on Merseyside.
Manquillo, capped seven times by Spain under-21s, has since enjoyed a productive spell on loan at Marseille, but currently remains surplus to requirements at Atletico.
Sky sources also understand Sunderland are interested in signing Barnsley centre-back Alfie Mawson.
Mawson, who joined Barnsley from Brentford last summer, is keen on a move to the Premier League and is also attracting interest from other clubs.
The 22-year-old has two years remaining on his contract at Oakwell and has appeared in all four of Barnsley's opening matches to the new Sky Bet Championship season.
