Championship round-up: Wolves close on Cardiff

Wolves stormed into the Sky Bet Championship automatic promotion places after a resounding 4-0 victory at struggling Burton.

Nuno's side raced out of the blocks with two goals in the opening 11 minutes from Jota and Romain Saiss. Ruben Vinagre added a third just before the break and Leo Bonatini put the game beyond any doubt after 62 minutes.

Burton have failed to score in five of their last six Championship games but second-placed Wolves are now just a point behind leaders Cardiff.

The Bluebirds were held to a 0-0 draw by Derby at the Cardiff City Stadium, but extended their unbeaten run in the league to four games. Sheffield United failed to take advantage as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest and slipped down to third place.

Birmingham's new boss Steve Cotterill watched on as the Blues fell to a comprehensive 6-1 defeat at Hull. The Blues appointed Cotterill as Harry Redknapp's successor on Friday, but Lee Carsley was left to take the team at the KCOM Stadium.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson picked up a valuable 2-2 draw against former club Preston at Deepdale. George Honeyman broke the deadlock for the Black Cats in the 28th minute, but Josh Harrop levelled with a free-kick for North End 10 minutes after half-time.

The hosts took the lead again two minutes later courtesy of a fantastic Jordan Hugill strike before Aiden McGeady hit back for Sunderland, who have still won just once in the league this season, a matter of seconds later.

Bolton remain rock bottom and without a victory this term after a 1-0 defeat at in-form Aston Villa. Jonathan Kodjia picked himself up after being fouled by Mark Beevers to convert a penalty after 39 minutes before Neil Taylor was sent off late on for the hosts.

Highlights of the Sky Bet Championship match between Hull City and Birmingham City.

Martin Braithwaite scored his first goal for Middlesbrough in the 2-2 draw against Brentford at the Riverside Stadium. Elsewhere, Barnsley and Bristol City both picked up 3-1 away wins over Millwall and Ipswich respectively.

Goals from Josh Brownhill and Famara Diedhiou put Bristol City 2-0 up after 31 minutes before Martyn Waghorn pulled one back for Ipswich, but Bobby Reid made sure of the three points.

Reading lost 2-1 at home to Norwich in the late game on Saturday, while Fulham won 2-1 at QPR on Friday night.
