Preston's Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle were sent off in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday - for fighting each other.
The bizarre incident occurred in the 90th minute as the visitors chased an equaliser in the Sky Bet Championship encounter at Hillsborough, with Beckford reacting badly to Doyle's failure to put him through on goal and instead pass to Marnick Vermijl.
That left Preston with just nine men for the remainder of stoppage time and manager Simon Grayson was furious with the pair afterwards, promising disciplinary action and branding the scrap as "embarrassing".
"In 30 years of being a footballer, player or manager, I've never seen an incident like that between two team-mates," said Grayson. "I thought I'd seen it all at the Forest game last night but today has been an embarrassment with those players.
"Absolute childish behaviour from the pair of them has cost us ultimately a point out of this game, potentially three, because at 2-1, 11 against 10, it looked like we were going to get something out of the game.
"They've let a lot of people down. Those players will be reprimanded regardless because they've cost us an opportunity to get something out of today's game and potentially a three-match ban for both of them."
Doyle had given Preston a vital lifeline eight minutes earlier by halving the deficit, with Wednesday having led 2-0 thanks to Fernando Forestieri's header and Steven Fletcher's penalty.
Forestieri had himself been dismissed by the time Fletcher converted his 79th-minute spot-kick and Wednesday were themselves down to nine at the moment Beckford and Doyle saw red, as Will Buckley was receiving off-field treatment.
But Preston promptly shot themselves in the foot thanks to Beckford and Doyle's spat, handing the advantage back to the Owls, who held on to climb into the play-off zone.
