Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday are locked in a tug of war for Mike Williamson and both have made progress with their bids.

The Sky Bet Championship rivals want the Newcastle defender on a permanent deal and the clubs are edging closer to striking an agreement with the Magpies.

Press Association Sport understands Williamson does not have a favoured club and is yet to discuss personal terms with either.

It is also understood any move is not set in stone and the 32-year-old could yet remain at St James' Park to see out the rest of his contract, which expires in June.

The centre-back, though, is keen to play and has no fears of dropping into the Championship after struggling to nail down a starting spot this season.

He has only played twice in the Capital One Cup for the Magpies this term and was loaned out to Wolves in October.

Williamson played five games for Kenny Jackett's side before being recalled to cover Newcastle's injury crisis but injured his hamstring in training and is yet to play since returning to the north east.

Wolves are 11th in the Championship with Wednesday, who reportedly wanted Reading striker Nick Blackman before he joined Derby, five points ahead in seventh.

Williamson has made 170 appearances for the Magpies, scoring twice, since joining from Portsmouth in 2010.
