Watford manager Walter Mazzarri claimed there were "two fouls" in the build-up to Chelsea's winning goal on Monday.
The Hornets looked like they would snatch a point against the Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge as they came from 3-1 down to level at 3-3.
But substitute Cesc Fabregas scored an 88th-minute winner as Watford suffered their fifth straight defeat.
"When a manager loses a game like this, and we lost others as well during the season in this way, they say he is unlucky and tries to find excuses, but you saw how the game went," Mazzarri told Sky Sports.
"There were two fouls [for the fourth goal]. One on [Tom] Cleverley, and another on [Etienne] Capoue. And we were unfortunate because we could have scored before then with [Valon] Behrami and [Daryl] Janmaat, and these decisions made us lose the game."
Watford could finish just a point above the relegation zone if they lose to Manchester City on the final day of the season on Sunday.
But Mazzarri pointed out that his side have suffered from injury problems in recent weeks.
"The most positive thing is we had 40 points with six games remaining and we came in with many injuries and we managed to get to 40 points," he said.
"In this moment we had five defenders out injured and we played the way we played today. Three of these defenders would be in the starting XI and they have not played for a while.
"If you consider everything that has happened to us, injuries…all these players, even a big team with a big squad like Chelsea the same thing would have happened."
Asked whether he will be at the club next season, Mazzarri added: "I have a three-year contract, and these games help me a lot to check the team I have and who wants to be here and who needs to be here next year."
