Nottingham Forest have rejected a £2.5m bid from rivals Derby for Henri Lansbury - and Watford are now preparing a bid of their own, according to Sky sources.
It is understood that Lansbury would prefer a move to the Premier League and that could be to a club at which he previously spent time on loan.
Lansbury - a 26-year-old former Arsenal academy graduate - sees his current contract expire in the summer, leaving him free to speak to other clubs in the current January window.
Forest are in the midst of a takeover by an American consortium, while club officials have been trying to negotiate a new contract with Lansbury's representatives.
But they would face losing him for nothing in the summer if he does not sign a new deal and both Derby and Watford are looking to take advantage by signing one of the best players in the Championship in recent seasons.
Lansbury has scored 33 goals in 150 appearances since joining Forest from Arsenal for a fee of £1m in August 2012.
He previously spent time on loan at Watford while trying to get in Arsene Wenger's first-team plans, as well as stints at Scunthorpe, Norwich and West Ham.
