Etienne Capoue says his friendship with Danny Rose will be put on hold today

Watford star Etienne Capoue is hoping he can come back to haunt his former club Tottenham when the teams meet on Nissan Super Sunday.

The midfielder left Spurs for Watford in 2015 and has developed into a key man for Walter Mazzarri's side.

His presence in the midfield is crucial to the way in which Watford go about their business and he's also chipped in with five Premier League goals.

Despite his good relationship with his former club, Capoue is hoping to derail their charge up the table on New Year's Day.

"They are such a good team - it is so hard to play against them, they play very good football," he said.

"They like to have the ball for the whole game so it's going to be difficult for us. We are playing at home so it is good to be very compact and if we have one chance, we need to be clinical. That's the key to beating them is being clinical when you get a chance.

"They are my former club, I have to be focused on what I have to do for my new club. If I don't think about them, I will be lost in the game. They are my old team-mates so of course it is special but once the game starts, I will forget it and I am focused on getting three points.

"I hope we win and if I score, perfect and I will enjoy it of course."

After a fast start to the season, including a victory over Manchester United, Watford's form has stagnated in recent weeks.

Ahead of the visit of Spurs, Mazzarri's side have only won one of their last six matches but are sitting eight points above the relegation.

"It is very hard because we are a new club in the Premier League and I think the top clubs are always at the top so it is difficult for us," he said.

"It's like two leagues in one league so we have to be very, very good in our league and enjoy it against the big teams and if we can get the points, we have to get them.

"The point is to play the games very hard in our league and to get many points and to reach a goal to touch the top clubs. I think this is the way we have to think."
